Biodegradable plastics, especially FDA-approved PCL, are becoming increasingly popular as eco-friendly alternatives. However, PCL takes 2-3 years to decompose. Materials embedded with PCL-degrading lipase (PCLase) are gaining interest to address this challenge. Yet, the enzyme activity in the composite cannot tolerate during the thermoforming manufacturing process at 100°C. Mingdao iGEMers employ SpyRing method to enhance thermostability by cyclizing PCLase. This innovative material represents a significant step towards environmental sustainability.
